Jacktor's Motel

Does any remember a creepy, seedy black and red motel on 47th and Kedzie? I believe there is a Dunkin Donuts there now. It was so old; the stairs were below street level. It was still up in the early to mid 1970's. My dad said there was some kind of Thomas Edison connection with that place. Back when kids made fun of other kids' mamas, they would say, "Your mama works at Jacktor's Motel." I'm not sure the spelling of the name is correct.
I would love to see an old picture or just to see the number in an old phone book. No one I've spoken to has ever heard of this place. I just want to confirm that it existed.

Jakter Hotel, 4701 s. Kedzie, 847-2161. If my memory serves me correctly, this building was quite historic as it was the first AT&T long distance office in Chicago. From what I recall, it was two or three stories tall, biege brick. I was sad to see that one come down. I think it was built in the 1880s and was torn down in the 1980s. Geez, I used to have a photo of the place when it was the LD office!

Look closely at the front. There are two large round openings where the long distance cabling entered the building.

Thank you so much for the information. It was awesome to see pictures of Jakter's Hotel after all these years! And, I finally learned the story behind what my dad was trying to tell me about the telephone connection. He didn't quite know the details though. I can't believe that hotel was that old - it's amazing!
It was also great to see the old CTA bus in the photo. My dad retired from CTA; he drove the Archer bus route for many years. On Halloween night, "punks," as my dad would call them, used to throw eggs and bricks through the windows. I can't believe that bus drivers used to have to make change for the passengers, and remember the SuperTransfer? I remember my transfer being punched up like a piece of Swiss cheese.
Since you are familiar with that area, do you remember a little grill across the street from Peace Lutheran School on California; there was also a Van's grocery store on one corner. My grandma used to take me to that grill after picking me up from school. I used to get the chili dog. The owner/cook made everything from scratch. I stopped by in the early 90's to take a look at the old place, thinking it was now a Mexican restaurant. I could not believe it - the place was still there, and I'm pretty sure it was the same old lady running the place. Even the prices were the same! Everything was the same - it was like going back in time. Very Twilight Zone type feeling. I don't know if it's still there.

Wow. That sounds pretty brutal even if someone has no idea what "Jactor’s Motel" is. I may have to hang on to that one for a fitting occasion.

I had some good times there. It was a Hotel not a Motel. Or a No Tell.

I dought if the same old lady is there. It was like being home in your kitchen.

Yep. The Jakter was on the southeast corner of 47th and Kedzie. There's a Dunkin' Donuts and a small strip mall there now. I grew up four blocks from there. Before it was torn down, the Jakter had a reputation of having some "professional" escorts working there.
As for 43rd and Mozart, the name of the restaurant was Hejno's (sp?). My mom took us in there when we were kids. In fact, she hung out in there when she was a kid with all her friends from Kelly High School.
You had Hejno's on 43rd and Mozart, Van's grocery store, Ocwieja Funeral Home and Peace Lutheran's school and church hall that had a six-lane bowling alley.
Brighton Park was an amazing neighborhood in which to grow up. My old parish and grade school, Five Holy Martyrs, is still on 43rd and Richmond.

Thanks I lived there from 1961 to 1997 on 46th & francisco. Our granson went to Peace also.
